Tips For Choosing The Best CCTV Lenses For Your Surveillance Camera

Probably one of the most important components of a surveillance camera security system is the camera itself. This is the unit that is responsible for capturing images and helping home and business owners monitor the activities within their areas. Even more important is the camera lens, which allows cameras to capture images at certain distances and lighting levels.

While cameras in most CCTV security systems often come equipped with a built-in lens, dealers usually sell lenses separately. If you're not familiar with which lens to buy, your security system may not perform as well as you expect it to. Here's how to choose which CCTV lenses you should get when considering a camera security system:

Consider compatibility. CCTV lenses should work well with your security system. Find the right size that is compatible with the camera in order to maximize its use. Sometimes, you can use lens with formats that are larger than what the camera needs but most experts will not recommend this. It's a temporary solution, but it's better to use the right type of lenses for every camera you have.

Choose the lens size. CCTV lenses mounted on standard surveillance cameras usually come in 4 or 4.3mm size. If you choose a bigger sized lens, you'll get a closer view of the object. A 12mm or 16mm lens, for example, will give you a better view of a building about 20 feet away.

How well CCTV lenses work will depend on the lens' angle of view, so you need to consider the focal. Remember that the larger the focal number you get, the narrower the angle you'll receive. Your choice will depend on how wide an object or area you want to monitor.

To find out what type of lens focal you need, consider the width of the target area or object you want to view, the distance between that object and the camera and the width of the camera's sensor. If you prefer to have more flexibility in terms of viewing, you can use a variable focal CCTV lens to help you adjust your view of the area or object. Lenses come in varied sizes, such as 2.8 to 33mm, 3.5 to 8mm or even a 5 to 100mm lens, so choose the appropriate size for your needs.

You can also choose CCTV lenses with zoom capability so you can manipulate the field of view you want to see. If you prefer to control your CCTV cameras from a remote location, you can even opt for motorized lenses as long as you're willing to spend. However, motorized zoom lenses are effective for general and detailed surveillance.

Choosing CCTV lenses for indoor and outdoor use. For indoor use, such as in an office or store, choose a CCTV lens with a manually operated iris. The iris regulates how much light enters the camera so that the image that appears in your monitor screen is easily recognizable. If the area where the camera will be located is always illuminated, a manual iris is best since it does not need to automatically adjust to the lighting. A CCTV lens with a manual iris is also cheaper.

For outdoors use, get a lens that is equipped with an automatic iris. One of the challenges a CCTV lens faces when used outdoors is the constant change in lighting. Light outdoors varies, moving from dark to dim to light to very bright and back to dark again. The electronic iris regulates how much light enters the camera so there's no need to manually adjust the lens. That way, you are assured of effortless monitoring every time.
